Horror Cinema Classics RPG

Created by Wayward Studios

Step into the chilling world of Horror Cinema Classics, a role-playing game that plunges players into the eerie, neon-lit nightmares of 1980s horror movies. Will you be the one to rewrite the script or fall victim to the horrors waiting in the shadows?

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Stretch Goal attained! Here's Tim Snider!
6 months ago – Mon, Sep 29, 2025 at 05:30:15 PM

You did it! Thanks to your pledges we are bringing the Maestro of Mayhem, Tim Snider, to the party! Tim has some diabolical plans for you and your players. We're happy to provide a little teaser for Tim's adventure, Speed Demon!

Speed Demon is a 3rd level adventure. A maniacal driverless car is terrorizing the isolated desert community of Granite Hollow, AZ. Citizens who dare step outside are targeted for mechanized murder, and those who try to escape the town are never seen again. The Darkness is behind the wheel, and the Devil is its copilot!

If you like such movies as Christine, Maximum Overdrive, or Crash, then Speed Demon is what you've been looking for!

Let's keep this party going and crush those stretch goals. I know you all want to see what Stephen Newton has knocking around in that devious mind of his. Look for another update soon that will be providing blurbs for the four adventures the Dark Council are writing.

Again, we are humbled and thankful for your support!

Stretch Goals!
6 months ago – Sat, Sep 27, 2025 at 02:05:22 PM

Ok, we've been teasing long enough. The stretch goals are now posted on the Story page, but here they are in all their glory.

I can't tell you how excited we are to announce that we are collaborating with such amazing writers as Tim Snider, Stephen Newton, Bob Brinkman, and Jon Hook! Help spread the word and let's get these adventures written!

In the coming days we'll be providing more details about what these horror connoisseurs have planned. In addition, we'll be providing information about the adventures being written by the Dark Council.

Finally, we'll be posting some videos on YouTube, explaining some of the new mechanics of the game so that you'll be all set to run those games on Halloween.

$20,000 – Ribbon added to hardcover

Upon reaching 20K, there will be a satin ribbon bookmark included in both physical versions (standard and limited edition) of the book.

$22,000 – Script by Tim Snider

We have secured several guest writers who are clawing at the gates to write a script for HCC!  Our first guest writer is Tim Snider; upon reaching 22K, all backers will receive the digital PDF version of the yet to be named adventure for free by way of DriveThruRPG at the time of fulfillment. The script will also be made available as a physical add-on at the discounted price of $14.00 (retail $16.00).

Tim Snider is an editor by trade and has been gaming since the early 1980s. Tim has written several adventures for Goodman Games' Mutant Crawl Classics RPG, including When Manimals Attack, Mayhem on the Magtrain, Crash of the Titans, and Rivers of Iron. He has self-published his own material for MCC RPG as well: Martian Crawl Classics, Dead in the Water, The Desk in Room 8-10, and Phage From Below. Tim also works behind-the-scenes as a freelance editor for Goodman Games.

However, he is no stranger to horror role-playing! Tim is co-author of Cryptworld for GoblinoidGames/Pacesetter; he is also author of Burial Plots and lead developer of Monsters Macabre for the system. Tim continues to support Cryptworld through his Creepy Comic Conversion series, where he converts 1950s horror comics into terrifying adventures for modern role-playing. He has also written several horrific DCC RPG supplements for his Country Meat-Grinder Classics line, including The Hellson Horror, Wasted, Harvest of the Wytch, and the upcoming Shrieks in the Night. Tim has also had short stories published in The Creeps and Cosmic Horror Monthly magazines.

$24,000 – Script by Stephen Newton

Our second guest writer is Stephen Newton; upon reaching 24K all backers will receive the digital PDF version of the yet to be named adventure for free by way of DriveThruRPG at the time of fulfillment. The adventure will also be made available as a physical add-on at the discounted price of $14.00 (retail $16.00).

Stephen Newton has been a horror aficionado since his mom let him watch Night of the Living Dead at a disturbingly young age. For over 15 years, Stephen has been splashing the ink for Goodman Games and Thick Skull Adventures. He's best known for his horror-themed adventures and articles, including the inaugural title in the DCC Horror line, "They Served Brandolyn Red," as well as fan favorites like "Creep Skrag Creep", “The Last Will and Testament of Obediah Felkner”, and "The Corpse That Love Built." Stephen is very excited to see the Horror Crawl Classics reach out from the ground with its bony hand.

$26,000- Script by Bob Brinkman

Our third guest writer is Bob Brinkman; upon reaching 26K, all backers will receive the digital PDF version of the yet to be named adventure for free by way of DriveThruRPG at the time of fulfillment. The adventure will also be made available as a physical add-on at the discounted price of $14.00 (retail $16.00).

Bob Brinkman is a Lovecraftian film scholar, podcaster (Sanctum Secorum), and RPG author who published his first adventure, Silent Night for Call of Cthulhu, in 2006. These days he spends much of his time writing in the Dungeon Crawl Classics universe (DCC, MCC, Weird Frontiers, Umerica, Heroic Adventure, HCC). His love of horror is on full display in his Halloween adventure Night of the Bog Beast, a nod to both Margaret St. Clair as well as classic comic monster The Heap.

When not writing role playing game materials, Bob is at work on a number of Lovecraftian film projects, with Shadows & Celluloid: A Viewer's Guide to 1,000 Lovecraftian Short Films nearing completion. Bob resides in Indiana with his wife, Judge Jen, and their four black cats.

$28,000- Script by Jon Hook

Our fourth and final guest writer is Jon Hook; upon reaching 28K, all backers will receive the digital PDF version of the yet to be named adventure for free by way of DriveThruRPG at the time of fulfillment. The adventure will also be made available as a physical add-on at the discounted price of $14.00 (retail $16.00).

Jon is a Cthulhu cultist. His first published Call of Cthulhu adventure was Timeless Sands of India in 2012, the seventh adventure in Goodman Games' Age of Cthulhu line, (an official license of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu RPG). Jon spent several years in the Goodman Games bullpen writing more Age of Cthulhu adventures, the 2017 Halloween adventure, Shadow Under Devil's Reef, and contributing to two of the alphabet books, Metamorphosis Alpha: Epsilon City, a couple of the DCC Annuals, and other system-neutral essays. Jon has also had a few Call of Cthulhu scenarios published with Chaosium, Inc, including Shadow Over Providence which premiered at the Necronomicon convention in 2019.

Jon is also an ENNIE award winning podcaster. For nine years, he was one of the founding members of the Miskatonic University Podcast. In 2023, Jon, and his friend, (YouTube darling), Seth Skorkowski, founded Modern Mythos, a podcast that discusses horror and investigative role-playing games. You can find, follow, befriend, and stalk Jon on Facebook and Discord.

$30,000 – Fold out map of Tangled Root Valley, Pad of Extra Sheets, Pad of Character Sheets included with all physical orders.

While it is hard to follow those four awesome guest writers, the show must go on!  If we reach 30K we will include a fold out Map of Tangled Root Valley, the small Wisconsin town that several current and future scripts take place in.  In addition, we will send a pad of extra sheets and a pad of character sheets!  These items will go out to all physical backers upon fulfillment and be available as a free download on DriveThruRPG for all backers.

$35,000 – 11x17 poster of the cover art

Upon reaching the 35K mark all physical backers will receive one folded 11x17 poster of the cover image free of charge at the time of fulfillment.  This cover, done by legendary DCC staff artist Bradley McDevitt, will be a fine addition to your horror shrine!

$45,000- Four Scripts by guest writers included for free for all physical item backers.

If we make it all the way to 45K, we will cancel all physical add-ons for the four guest scripts (adventures), because every physical backer will receive them for free automatically upon fulfillment!   This one is a huge thank you to all our backers!  (yeah, yeah, that will set us back under 45K, but we love you so we just have to do it!)

Thanks again for you continued support!

Funded in 8.5 hours!
6 months ago – Tue, Sep 23, 2025 at 08:25:04 PM

You all are amazing! Horror Cinema Classics is going to be brought to life thanks to your belief in our project. In just 8 1/2 hours we are funded. I'm usually not at a loss for words, but all of us are absolutely stunned. I'm going to keep this update brief because of the previously mentioned stunned condition.

So what's next? Stretch goals! We've been hinting at them, but now I can provide some specifics. We've recruited some stellar authors to write adventures for HCC. I'll send another update once we get the stretch goals organized, but I'll do a little name dropping here, just to whet the appetite. How about Tim Snider, Stephen Newton, Bob Brinkman, and Jon Hook? We've discussed their ideas for delving into the world of HCC and can't wait to bring them to you. Stay tuned for more info.

Again, we can't thank you enough for backing our project! Let's keep rolling and make this an absolutely amazing campaign! Remember, if you back within the first 48 hours, you'll receive a special edition Trope Token. What's a Trope Token? We'll be talking about that soon as well.

Deepest Regards,

Mark, Andy, Eric, Randy (The Dark Council)
